Much of the beauty of Peterborough is within walking distance. Here are some simple walks for you to begin your adventure.
Cliff Top Walk - an easy walk
Time: 1.5 hours one way
This is the most popular walk in Peterborough. The length of time for the walk depends on how long you stop to admire the scenery, or if you venture down the steps to the beaches. If you walk gently and quietly, you can hear the song of the Rufous Bristlebird, an endangered bird found in our coastal park. Keep your eyes out for any wildlife, we have bandicoots along this walk.
Please keep your dog on a lead and do not leave any rubbish behind.
Main Beach Walk - an easy walk
Time: 45 mins one way
When you park the car and go down the steps to the beach, you leave the road behind. This gentle walk encourages you to consider the power of the sea and it's effect on the coastline. The massive sand dune, know locally as Mt Zeus, Everest and more, guards the wetlands between the beach and the lake, hard to climb up it's great to slide down. If you walk to the very end of the beach, there's a rock formation known as the Crown of Thorns. When you take the walk across the bridge, the view of the estuary is grand. This is a great spot to find the wading birds who like to feed in these shallows. On the far side of the bridge, you can walk down to the bank of the lake, a popular fishing spot.
Estuary Walk - an easy walk
Time: 10 mins one way
At Dorey St there is a boat ramp and along the sands to the bridge, is a spot for the fisherfolk. This short walk is good for watching the birds and you get a sense of the size of the estuary here. In winter this is not the best walk, the waters of the estuary may be high and the beach may be underwater. In summertime, it is delightful.
Wetlands Walk - an easy walk
Time: 15 mins one way
Much of this walk is along a road shared with cars, so appropriate road sense is essential. On this walk you can see how the ponds and waterholes drain the land surrounding into the estuary. A different and prolific birdlife is to be found here, including the Lathan's Snipe, an endangered bird that loves to visit Peterborough. This walk is a great place to catch the sunrising over the estuary.
